MEET BENOIT & JEAN DE DIEU

BENOIT

A survivor who lost his father and 9 siblings during the genocide

“I wish that the government would support this workshop and spread all around the country.”

Benoit had miraculously survived through the militias’ attack. The RPF military almost found him but moved passed the place where he was hidden.

As Benoit stood up, he explained in detail how the workshop has helped him and he expressed forgiveness to Jean de Dieu.

Benoit also said that:  “ I wish that the government would support this workshop and spread all around the country. This workshop helped me to heal all the pains and it went beyond what happened in Gacaca court.  I want to not only forgive Jean de Dieu but all the Hutus who were together with him in killing my family members including my father.”

JEAN DE DIEU

One of his offenders

“What we have learned here changed my mind and my heart, Benoit, please forgive me.”

Jean de Dieu Ruremesha was a member of the group that killed Benoit’s family members. According to Jean de Dieu, he truly believed that Tutsi were supposed to be killed which is why, until attending of the workshop, he could not understand why he was arrested and spend many years in the prison.

Jean de Dieu said, “ This workshop helped me to understand very well that what I did during the genocide is beyond any human being understanding. I didn’t know that we were all the same people. From the bottom of my heart I want to ask for forgiveness to Benoit for what I have done to him. I don’t know if I deserve forgiveness. What we have learned here changed my mind and my heart, Benoit, please forgive me.”
